Do it the Rennes way : start late
By: Shazback | August 21st, 2007
Hi. I’m Alexandre Lyon, and I go by the alias of Shazback. I’m going to blog rennes.theoffside.com, and keep you up with all the latest news from the Stade Rennais, also known as Rennes.
Now, I can already hear you saying “Stade who ?” and wondering who Rennes are. Shame on you. Rennes aren’t European powerhouses, but they are a well-known French Ligue 1 side, and have been graced by players such as Petr Cech, Kim Källström, Alexander Frei and John Utaka in recent years, as well as being a hotspot of French talent, with Gourcuff, Faty, Briand and Didot having come through Rennes’ youth system, and on the verge of promising carrers.
Sure, Rennes don’t have much silverware. Two French “FA” Cups in 106 years is a bit meagre… But that doesn’t stop Rennes from having quite a bit of history, and the new staff president François Pinault has brought in since 1998 seem to intend to add a few lines to Rennes’ roll of honour in the next years.
You’re probably also wondering why I’m starting this blog whilst Rennes have already played four games. Well, that’s the way Rennes do things : late. Rennes have become surprise packages in Ligue 1 for the past few years, despite abysmal season starts. Last season, Rennes were 19th in Ligue 1 after 4 matches, with only 1 point. But after a late start, Rennes started to show form and finished strong, grabbing 4th place and UEFA Cup qualification, and missing out on the Champions League by conceding a goal in the 93rd minute of their last game… This brings us to our second point : Rennes are a bit of a “looser” club. But all that’s changing, and the 4th place last season was Rennes’ best ever league result. Believe it or not. 50 seasons in Ligue 1, and never in the top 3. Only Metz has worse luck : 56 seasons of top flight and only ever 2nd…
Well, I’ll do my best to bring you all the news from the Stade de la Route de Lorient, even if I do start late !

Excellent, a Rennes blog! This club produces a lot of talent and is one of L1’s better sides. With the right management and some better money marketing, Rennes would be a serious title contender. As it stands, I think they’ll make it into the latter stages of the UEFA Cup.
It was a shame that Melchiot left for Wigan. Very disappointing. But I know Nino’s presence will more than make up for it. He’s a game changer, pure and simple.

I’m sure Alex is for Rennes because they play with similar colours as Man Utd does.
